Keller Williams Leadership and TRUST
June 3, 2009Leadership begins with TRUST – and frankly it will end without TRUST.
TRUST is the knowing a truth - and reliability. By it’s very nature trust has to be consistent. Trust should be earned, not implied! Trust is not a feeling!!!!!
Trust is about having character – and character is having integrity, motivation, and intention with people. Competence is having skills, ability, and a track record. Combine character & competence and we get a very powerful dynamic called trust.
There are a number of types trust:
1. Personal Trust is having a relationship build to consistency with someone whereas;
2. Organizational Trust is alignment of values first and vision second – without alignment organizational trust is kaput; and,
3. Trust in self is having the knowledge and ability to do something.
In an organization where we are “paying” associates we have the “right” to have them “comply” with our values, mission, and vision – and if they do not we dismiss.
In a “volunteer” organization we select those that are willing, able, and ready to align with our vision, mission, and values and we “earn” their “trust & respect” with consistent behavior in support of their journey to achieve their dreams and aspirations while enlisting their LEADERSHIP in our Values, Mission, Growth, and future.
The reason we have a covenant is to try to get the ALC members to make and keep agreements – and in real estate that would be “laws” whereas in theology that would be a relationship agreement with God – it is just a much stronger way of saying agreement – and most folks do not understand the difference.
It is much like going into the Armed Services. First one would enlist, be selected, and only then would one take an oath to our Constitution and defending our country. Once we have taken an oath (i.e. read covenant), we the have a RESPONSIBILITY to meet and exceed the standards and expectations.
Now here is were the rub is in civilian life versus military. When in the military you have now incurred a DUTY to meet your responsibilities, even at the risk of one’s life. In other words we have now a moral, ethical, and human obligation to be there for each other, and in fact we are counting on each other at the expense of each other!
In “The Lone Survivor” Navy Seal Marcus Luttrel trusted his team members with his life – and they with his. This trust was earned through 6 weeks of indoctrination where 35% of the candidates ring the bell and in the next 9 months training in all their special services another half rang the bell <with absolutely no disrespect to themselves, their units or their teammates. It just might surprise one to know that when a SEAL candidate starts indoctrination they will never let their “buddy” out of sight – got the visual?
To gather an ALC or Team around you in a volunteer organization and have that sense of responsibility , duty, covenant, or whatever you choose requires exceptional leadership! And that sir is the big challenge of the role of TL – there is not a bigger challenge than selecting, organizing, engaging, motivating, energizing, and leading a volunteer group to follow you. And to do this the Team Leader has to have TRUST – VISION – MISSION – VALUES. In other words, my value added to my ALC member should be so compelling that member is prepared to give up time, energy, and money for our future!
I hope you have something to think about. Let’s start now on the 2009 ALC by gathering prospects, building a file, having DISC profiles, compiling Strength Finder, and making a concerted effort on people we want to LEAD!
